There’s so much to see and do in Protaras and Ayia Napa. No one could blame you if you spent the majority of your holiday relaxing in the sunshine on the golden sand of one of the many beaches, but sometimes it’s nice to take a break and get out exploring a little. You never know what wonders you might discover! You’ll find a wealth of really special churches and chapels in the area, taking the time to step off the beaten track for a while is certainly rewarding. Here are three of our favourite chapels that are well worth a visit…
The Ayios Nikolaos Chapel in Protaras
This chapel is worth visiting if only for a great photograph! The whitewashed chapel with it’s bright blue dome and door looks so stunning against the blue backdrop of the sea and the sky. It’s such a pretty sight, and from here you are treated to some awe-inspiring panoramic views. This chapel is a popular location for weddings and christenings, and it’s easy to see why. It’s also close to Louma Beach and Protaras harbour, so there’s plenty more to explore in the area.
The Profitis Elias Chapel in Protaras
With all that lazing around on the beach, you may feel like a little exercise. If you do, then you’ll certainly have a workout ascending the 153 steps to the Profitis Elias chapel! This is definitely a place to linger, the views are amazing and you’ll soon forget all about those arduous steps. Take a look inside and you’ll discover some interesting frescoes. This is a fairly modern chapel, built in the 1980s on the site of a church that had been destroyed. The views at night are just as stunning as during the day, so plan a return visit to enjoy a beautiful show of stars and the lights of Protaras.
Ayii Anargyri Chapel in Cape Greco, Ayia Napa
Located in the heart of the Cape Greco National Park, this picturesque chapel on the edge of the cliffs offers some wonderful photo opportunities. It has a particularly magical feel at sunset. If you’ve never visited Cape Greco before, you’re in for a real treat. There are some stunning walks along the cliffs with great views of the sea caves.
Discover a life by the sea
All of the chapels have an air of peace and tranquillity about them. A feeling that can be so hard to find in our modern world that tends to be so busy and hectic. Perhaps you would enjoy making Protaras or Ayia Napa your home, visiting these magical spots whenever you like, enjoying a new life by the sea. Sometimes we need to step away from the rat race and find a calmer place that suits our style and enhances our health and well-being.
